Most people think burnout starts with exhaustion. It doesn’t.

In my conversation with psychologist Katrina Streatfeild, she said:

“One of the first signs of burnout isn’t exhaustion — it’s when you start feeling cynical about work you used to love.”

That subtle shift is easy to overlook — or brush off as “just a bad week” — but it’s often the first domino to fall. And once burnout takes hold, recovery becomes much harder.

The good news? If you know the early warning signs, you can take action before it derails your work, health, and relationships.

The Three Early Signs of Burnout

Katrina shared the three most common early warning signs:

  1. Energy depletion – You feel physically and mentally drained, even after rest.
  2. Cynicism – You become detached or negative about work you once enjoyed.
  3. Reduced effectiveness – You notice tasks take longer, and your usual creativity or problem-solving spark is missing.

Any one of these on its own can be a flag. But when two or three show up together, it’s time to pay attention.

Why High Achievers Are at Greater Risk

If you’re a high achiever, you may be even more vulnerable.

Katrina calls it the “no stop valve” problem — the tendency to keep pushing because you’re committed, capable, and used to handling big workloads.

The problem is, your resilience can mask the warning signs until you’re already in trouble.

How to Stop Burnout Before It Stops You

Katrina’s prevention strategies are simple but powerful:

  • Set boundaries that stick — Decide in advance what you will and won’t take on.
  • Get multiple kinds of rest — It’s not just about sleep. Include physical, sensory, creative, and emotional rest.
  • Practice self-compassion — Being hard on yourself only fuels the stress cycle. Treat yourself as you would a valued friend.

Looking Beyond Burnout

Catching burnout early isn’t just about damage control.  It’s also an opportunity to reassess your definition of success.

The goals you set five years ago might not fit your life now. Resetting them can help you create a way of working that’s sustainable — and keeps you out of the burnout cycle.
